SURREALISM

A surreal painting of a man in a suit, tie, and bowler hat, with a dove flying across his face, obscuring his facial features, against a background of sky and sea.

Surrealism is an art movement that feels like a waking dream, revealing the magic and strangeness hidden beneath everyday reality. Emerging as an art movement in the 1920s in France, Surrealism challenged reality with illogical scenes that combined ordinary objects in unexpected mysterious ways. It sought to unlock hidden thoughts and desires from the unconscious mind by bypassing rational thought, presenting strange and magical possibilities.
